Nanotechnology: Small Products, Big Impact to Agri-Fishery
With an aim to champion advanced frontier in science and technology, the Nanotechnology R&D Program and Facility was established at CLSU in 2018 it is the 1st nanotechnology program focusing on agri-fishery with a state-of-the-art facility in the Philippines to carter a one-stop-shop for nanotechnology and material science.
CLSU, being a lead in the region’s agri-fishery plays a big role in embracing modern technologies. Through nanotechnology, agri-fishery will be revolutionized by the innovation of new techniques such as enhancing the ability of plants to absorb nutrients, disease detection and disease control, and effective systems for processing, storage and packaging among others.
Through the efforts of Dr. Fe L. Porciuncula, VP for RET and Dr. Juvy Monserate, Program Head and his team, funds were generated from DA-BAR, DOST-PCIEERD, DOST-PCAARRD, PhilRice, PhilMech, Department of Budget and Management (DBM R-3)and the CLSU Capital Outlay amounting to an estimated value of Php 62,000,000.00 to date used in the construction of building, procurement of laboratory equipment, and conduct of researches.
The facility can be used at a low cost not only by the students but also by the faculty and staff researchers (even outsiders) who are into nanotechnology research. Through the program, advisorship and technical assistance are provided to graduate students inside and outside of University provided that a letter of request and a Memorandum of Understanding will be sent and inked (if outsider), respectively. To this date, The Program Head handles students from the UP System, Ateneo de Manila University, Mapua University, private and SUC's in Western Visayas, Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology, Pampanga State Agricultural University, and the different Science High Schools in the country.
It is hoped that in the future the Program will grow into a Center to accommodate more cutting-edge researches on nanotechnology in agri-fishery and further collaboration with other universities and research institutions in the Philippines and abroad.
